Depuis mon premier retour en terre natale en 2014, j’ai voulu traverser les mondes féminins de l’Algérie contemporaine, par-delà des stéréotypes exotiques ou post-coloniaux.

Dans la série JE, TU, ELLES, je poursuis ce travail à travers la forme de l’autoportrait. Dans un pays où la pratique de la photographie est complexe, entravée, où le rapport à l’image est si ambigu, passer par la mise en scène m’offre plus de liberté pour raconter des histoires que j’aurais difficilement pu photographier.

À Alger, Djanet, Tizi Ouzou... je me réapproprie les tenues de mes tantes, grand-mères, et celles des femmes qui m’entourent. Tantôt avec ou sans voile, en tenue kabyle ou touareg, je tente d’interroger à la fois la représentation du féminin, et ma propre fiction identitaire.

Since my first return to my homeland in 2014, I have wanted to traverse the feminine worlds of contemporary Algeria, beyond exotic or post-colonial stereotypes.

In the series ME, YOU, THEY, I continue this work through the form of self-portraiture. In a country where the practice of photography is complex, constrained, where the relationship with the image is so ambiguous, using staging offers me more freedom to tell stories that I would have found difficult to photograph.

In Algiers, Djanet, Tizi Ouzou... I reclaim the attire of my aunts, grandmothers, and those of the women around me. Sometimes with or without a veil, in Kabyle or Tuareg attire, I attempt to interrogate both the representation of the feminine and my own identity fiction.
